Why we fail at meeting our fitness goals

How many times have you set fitness goals in January and then failed to meet them?

Here we are at the mid-point of 2018 – are you on track to meet your fitness goal?  Have you given up already?

Why do so many of us have such a hard time reaching our goals?

I’m sure we all understand the importance of our health and we know we need to lose weight, do more cardio, etc.  So it isn’t that we don’t think it is important….then what is it?

There are many reasons, but let’s focus on the top three…..

  1. Setting unrealistic goals.

We live in a society that demand immediate results. But we didn’t get out shape in two weeks, why do we think it will take two weeks to reach our goals.

You want to set realistic and sustainable goals – this means setting realistic targets within a realistic time frame. Discouragement early in the journey will often quickly derail your efforts.

Sustainable progress is key to avoiding the yo-yo effect – we want you to maintain the progress you make.

  2. Doing it on your own.

Use a professional to work alongside you and develop your accountability team to be there to support you. Many of us hire professionals in all facets of our lives (accountants, landscapers, financial advisors, etc.) but when it comes to our health goals, we think it can be done all by ourselves.

Having a certified personal trainer to walk alongside of you, guide you through the workouts, and decide what exercises should be done for your age & abilities to reach your goals, will almost always guarantee results.

In addition, surround yourself with people who will keep you motivated, hold you accountable, and inspire you in the studio. It is much easier to skip a workout when no one is expecting you and no one will hold you accountable.

  3. Not making capacity in our lives.

Our lives are so full, probably overflowing with work, kids’ activities, travel, etc. that we often just cram our fitness goals on top of an already overflowing pile of responsibilities.

You need to carve out time from your schedule – and I don’t mean utilizing the 10 extra minutes at the end of the day for you or getting up at 4:30 am to cram a workout in.

I’m sure you can identify 30-45 minutes of activity per day that is less important than your long-term health. This has to be a priority on the schedule/calendar, something that you won’t miss unless it is an emergency.

Even business travel can quickly undermine a fitness goal if you don’t make the time to prepare ahead of travel (meal plan, take workouts, etc.) and then make time for working out when on the road.

In summary, many of us fail at reaching our fitness goals because we don’t set ourselves up for success.

By setting out on our own with unrealistic goals and without the adequate time and resources, why are we surprised when July comes around and we are not on target to reach out goals?
